Catholic Women's League members from across the diocese gathered in Combermere in September to participate in a day of reflection. Members of Holy Canadian Martyrs parish council greeted members from Arnprior to Temiscaming, Haliburton to Chapeau and points in between. The day was centered around a prayer service, "Living With the Saints", celebrating the lives of three unique women in our history. Saint Marguerite d'Youville, (foundress of the Grey Sisters of Montreal), Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, (patroness of the environment) and Catherine Doherty, (foundress of Madonna House) led exemplary lives and although they have not all been canonized, these women can serve as models for Catholic women today.

League members learned more about Catherine Doherty through an interesting DVD titled "Madonna House: The People of the Towel and Water" which outlined the beginnings of Madonna House. Tours of the various buildings in the center were arranged and members received prayer cards to take home. Despite the chilly weather, members were treated warmly and declared the day a great success thanks to the great hospitality of the ladies in Combermere. It was the first opportunity for many to see the ravages of summer storms that leveled so many of the beautiful trees in the area. In October, members again gathered to conduct League business, but this time the setting was Cobden. Once again the weather conspired against us, and approximately sixty brave souls from 20 councils drove through the storm to gather at Sacred Heart parish for the day where they were warmly welcomed by Donna Keon of Cobden. The spiritual theme "Embracing the Lord's Call" was introduced by Spiritual Development Chairperson, Helen Fitzpatrick. Pearl Keon, a former Provincial President, was celebrating her 88th birthday and enjoyed a spontaneous chorus of "Happy Birthday" sung by the ladies. Reports were once again spread throughout the day in keeping with a new practice begun last year. Each chairperson gave a special word as the focus of their report to help members relate the report to their own area. President Donna Shaddick introduced guest speaker, Eva Brushett , from St. Francis of Assisi CWL, CFB Petawawa. She told members about the country wide group quilt project to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Military Ordinaries Provincial Council. Each council in the Military Ordinaries contributed a block for the quilt which was then completed by the CFB Petawawa council. This quilt will be displayed at the annual convention of the Military Ordinariate. Margaret Maloney thanked Eva for her interesting talk. Pat Duggan, who has been to Medjugore 21 times, also addressed the gathering. She spoke about the first time she went on this pilgrimage and the shocking conditions she saw. Our Lady continues to ask for fasting, recitation of the rosary, monthly confession and the reading of scripture. Spiritual Advisor, Father Pat Tait was presented with a beautiful rosary at the conclusion of Pat Duggan’s talk. Pauline Hughes expressed gratitude for the interesting presentation. In the afternoon members received a "refresher" workshop on how to do annual reports from Organization chairperson, Suzanne Mullins. Pembroke Diocese will be the site for the Provincial Convention in 2008 so Members heard about fundraising plans for the project. Members heard about the provincial convention which had been held in Peterborough and the national convention which took place in Halifax. Diocesan President, Donna Shaddick, encouraged all members to make an effort to attend conventions in 2007. The provincial convention will take place in Windsor, while the national one will be held in Montreal.
