As Catholic Educators, the staff of St. Victor School in Mattawa has always promoted activities that reflect the tenets of our Catholic faith. Since September of this year students have participated in numerous activities that have raised funds for charitable organizations and helped others at home and abroad.

On Friday, September 29, 2006 the students took part in the National School Run Day. The students from Kindergarten to grade eight walked or ran to raise money for cancer research. They raised a total of $1,445.09 and the cheque was sent to the Terry Fox Foundation. Mr. Gilles Dupuis, who organized the event, was very proud of what the students accomplished. “The response was outstanding. I am amazed that a small school such as ours was able to raise $1,445.09,” he said. In October, the students participated in the fall food drive by going door to door during the night of the drive, at school they collected a basket of canned goods, and donated $100 in cash to the Mattawa and Area Food Bank. The money and the basket was presented to Father Tim Moyle during the offertory at the school Thanksgiving mass.

In November, the children donated their pennies and raised $100 in the Pennies for Peru campaign. " It shows the children that anyone can reach out and help a neighbour in need," said organizer Angie Cotnam. The cheque was presented to June Brayshaw, Diane McGee and Judy Duval of Mattawa. These three women join 40 other pilgrims from Renfrew County on a mission trip to Peru. Last week, the students sent a package of Christmas Cheer to our troops in Khandahar. This was in response to a letter from a friend and school volunteer, Garnet Blanchette, who is currently working on an army base in Afghanistan. The package, which was mailed December 1, 2006, contained magazines, candies, Kraft dinner, Granola bars, toothpaste and toothbrushes, cards and good wishes in the form of handcrafted Christmas cards.

"As you can see our school community has a truly generous spirit," said Karen Houston, the principal.

To commemorate Veteran's Week November 5-11, 2006, St. Victor School in Mattawa held a Remembrance Day Ceremony during their school assembly on Friday, November 10. The ceremony was organized by Peter Murphy and the students from the intermediate room. The students read poems and scriptures and learned about the origins of the poem Flander's Field by Captain John D. McRae. The students and staff joined the parents in a moment of silence to pay respect to fallen comrades and to honour Canadian Veterans.
