The Sisters of St. Joseph of Pembroke currently operate a mission in Peru, South America. Our sisters work in the Chincha Valley, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, 200 kilometres south of Lima.

Current Programs

Scholarship Program

An individual, family or organization can sponsor a Peruvian child’s studies for one year at a cost of $150.00. This donation pays for the child’s school supplies and his or her uniform. The school year in Peru begins in March and terminates just before Christmas. Benefactors will receive correspondence twice a year, as well as a picture of the sponsored child.

Breakfast Program

This program offers a ration of bread and milk to working men, to use as their sustenance during the day. During the school year, the rations most double because parents arrive to pick up breakfast for their schoolchildren.

Parish Health Centre

This center provides preventative health teaching, and offers benefits to those with illnesses.

Senior Citizens’ Home

Part of the mission in Chincha is the administration of a senior citizens home. There is accommodation for 40 residents, which is full at present. A dedicated staff of two nurses, a cook, watchmen/handymen, a housekeeper and an administrator work hard to keep this home going.

The Sisters’ ministry to the people of this area is primarily financed through Canadian donations. Donors may specify how they wish to have their gift used.

Ways to Assist our programs:

  • Sponsor a child for a one-year scholarship ($150)
  • Assist any of the other programs (breakfast program, health centre or senior citizens home)
  • Donate to the mission in general
  • Arrange a speaker for your group

This ministry to the people of the area is primarily financed through Canadian donations. All donations are deposited in a Pembroke bank account. As money is needed for the ministry in Peru, funds are converted into “American” dollars and transferred to Peru through the bank. This process eliminates “administration” fees that some of the larger mission organizations might have.

There are, however, minor expenses here in Canada—mainly, mailing expenses. Be assured that all donations are sent on to the mission to be used as donors wish.

The Sisters of St. Joseph would like to acknowledge and thank the following Catholic Women’s League groups for assistance, particularly in sponsoring a child for the school year. Some of these groups have been doing this for many years.

  • Our Lady of Fatima, Renfrew
  • Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Westmeath
