ARTICLE – The Apparitions of Garabandal: Messages and Relation to Evangelization (Part 2 – The Core Messages)

Two formal ‘messages’ were given for public dissemination, forming the core of the Garabandal communications.

First Message (October 18, 1961): This message was reportedly delivered through St. Michael the Archangel. It contained a call to action: “We must make many sacrifices, perform much penance, and visit the Blessed Sacrament frequently. But first, we must lead good lives”. It included a warning: “If we do not, a chastisement will befall us. The cup is already filling up and if we do not change, a very great Chastisement will come upon us”. This message was reportedly inscribed on a sign seen earlier but not understood by the children until explained by Our Lady.

Second Message (June 18, 1965): This message was also reportedly delivered via the angel. It began by stating that the first message had not been sufficiently complied with or promulgated: “As my Message of the 18th of October has not been complied with, and as it has not been made known to the world, I am telling you that this is the last one”. It escalated the warning: “Previously, the Cup was filling; now, it is brimming over”. This message contained a stark critique directed at the clergy: “Many Cardinals, Bishops and priests are following the road to perdition, and with them they are taking many more souls”. It also lamented a decline in devotion to the Eucharist: “Ever less importance is being given to the Holy Eucharist”. The message urged believers to “turn the wrath of God away from us by our own efforts” and assured pardon if forgiveness is sought with a sincere heart. It reiterated the call to amend lives, identifying itself as a “last warning” and conveying Mary’s love and desire to avert condemnation. It concluded with another call for sacrifice and reflection on the Passion of Jesus. The visionaries reported that Mary stressed the importance of the priesthood.

Overarching Theme: According to the visionaries, the fundamental purpose of the apparitions was a call for a “conversion of heart”. The messages consistently emphasized the urgent need for repentance, prayer (including the Rosary), frequent reception of the Sacraments (especially the Eucharist), works of penance, and leading morally upright lives.

The clear progression from the 1961 message (“cup filling”) to the 1965 message (“cup brimming over”) signals a perceived increase in urgency and gravity. The second message’s shift towards a direct and sharp critique, particularly targeting the clergy’s alleged failings (“road to perdition”) and the neglect of the Eucharist, suggests a view that the spiritual crisis had deepened, involving failures within the Church’s leadership itself. This escalation serves to underscore the seriousness of the call to conversion and lends weight to the potential consequences outlined in the prophetic announcements (Warning, Miracle, Chastisement), framing them as interventions necessitated by a lack of human response to the initial call.
