Beyond the two formal messages, the Garabandal narratives include prophecies of three major future events, plus other related predictions.
The Warning (Aviso): This is described as a future, universal, supernatural event originating directly from God, which science will be unable to explain. It is depicted as having both an external manifestation (visible everywhere in the sky, perhaps like colliding stars or a cross) and a profound internal impact. Simultaneously, every person on Earth, regardless of their beliefs or religion, will experience an “illumination of conscience”. They will see the state of their soul as God sees it, recognizing their sins, the good they failed to do, and the harm their actions have caused. This experience is termed a “correction of the conscience of the world,” akin to a purification or a personal judgment before death. While not causing direct physical harm (unless from shock, like a heart attack), it is expected to induce immense fear, emotional trauma, interior sorrow, and pain for having offended God. Some accounts state people would prefer death to experiencing it. The stated purpose of the Warning is purification, to foster conversion, draw people closer to God, increase faith, and prepare humanity for the subsequent Miracle. It is presented as God’s final great act of mercy before the Miracle.
The Great Miracle: This event is prophesied to occur at the pine grove (“the Pines”) overlooking Garabandal. It is expected within twelve months following the Warning. Conchita Gonzalez reportedly knows the exact date and nature of the Miracle and is tasked with announcing it to the world eight days in advance. Specific details reported include that it will happen on a Thursday evening at 8:30 PM, between March and May, coinciding with the feast day of a saint martyred for the Eucharist (not a feast of Jesus or Mary) and a significant event within the Church. Described as the greatest miracle Jesus will have performed for the world, it will be visible to all present in Garabandal and the surrounding mountains. Its effects will include the healing of the sick present at the site and the conversion of sinners. A major consequence foretold is the conversion of Russia and other countries. Furthermore, a permanent, supernatural sign will remain visible at the Pines until the end of time. This sign is described as something that can be seen, photographed, and televised, but cannot be touched, possibly resembling a column of smoke. It was also stated that the Pope would see the Miracle from wherever he is, and that Padre Pio also saw it before his death. A specific, related prophecy mentioned concerns Joey Lomangino, a blind American proponent, who was allegedly told he would regain his sight at the Miracle; however, his death while still blind has been noted as a point of controversy.
The Chastisement (Punishment): This third major event is presented as conditional, dependent on humanity’s collective response to the Warning and the Miracle. If the call to amend lives is not sufficiently heeded, a “very great Chastisement” or punishment will occur. The visionaries reported terrifying visions of this potential event during nocturnal ecstasies known as “The Nights of Screams”. Descriptions include fire falling from the sky, rivers turning to blood, immense heat causing water to evaporate, machines and engines ceasing to function, and widespread suffering and thirst. While presented as a divine purification, it is emphasized that this Chastisement can be averted through genuine conversion and turning back to God.
Other Prophecies: Additional predictions associated with Garabandal include a statement reportedly made to Conchita after the death of Pope John XXIII in 1963: “After this pope, there are only three left. Then it will be the end of times,” later clarified to include a fourth pope reigning for a very short time. Proponents have linked the “three popes” to Paul VI, John Paul I, and John Paul II, the “short reign” to John Paul I, and the subsequent pope (Benedict XVI) as marking the start of the “end of times” (interpreted not as the end of the world, but a decisive period). The death of Benedict XVI is thus seen by some as a significant marker. Another prophecy mentions that the Warning would occur when an “important synod” was taking place; some followers have connected this to the recent worldwide Synod on Synodality (2021-2024). There is also mention of a prophecy that “Communism” would return or be prevalent before the Warning occurs.
The predicted sequence of Warning, Miracle, and potential Chastisement constitutes a powerful, eschatologically charged narrative designed to elicit a profound response from humanity. The Warning functions as a universal, intimate confrontation with sin and the need for God’s mercy. The Miracle serves as an undeniable, public confirmation of the divine reality behind the Warning, offering grace for conversion and healing. The Chastisement represents the grave, albeit avoidable, consequence of persistent rejection of God’s mercy. This tripartite structure – warning, sign/grace, potential judgment – resonates deeply with patterns found throughout salvation history and biblical prophecy, lending the Garabandal predictions significant theological weight.
