DEVELOPMENT & PEACE

Development and Peace condemns fatal attack on Caritas centre in Ukraine

As you may be aware, the Ukrainian city of Mariupol has been virtually under siege and inaccessible to the media for weeks. News emerged only earlier this week that a Caritas centre in the city had sustained a Russian tank attack last month. Seven people, including two Caritas staff members, lost their lives in that attack.

Development and Peace has strongly condemned the atrocity and reaffirmed its commitment to peace and to the people of Ukraine.

Please read our statement and join us in praying for the bereaved.

What is Development and Peace in Canada? – The Pembroke Diocesan Council

Succinctly, we are a charity that is made up of educators, mobilizers, and fundraisers. Our mission is two-fold: to support partners in the Global South in their pursuit of alternatives to their unjust social, political, and economic structures, and to educate Canadians to the causes that exist in the Global South and the Global North that impoverish peoples and then mobilize actions for change.

This is your INVITATION to be part of the change, whether it be an educator, a mobilizer, or a fundraiser. Come to our Annual General Meeting on Thursday, May 19th at Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish in the Church Annex Hall, 295 First Avenue, Pembroke, ON from 7-9 p.m. Our Guest speaker is Bishop Guy Desrochers. Please come and meet the people who are choosing to be part of The Pembroke Diocesan Development and Peace Council, and learn how you too can become a team player for “People and Planet first”. To register to attend in person, or to attend by Zoom, please contact Deacon Adrien Chaput at 613 732-7933 ext. 206, or e-mail dcadrienchaput@pembrokediocese.com.

MARRIAGE, FAMILY, YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS

Steubenville Toronto Youth Conference is back on!! July 15 – 17th, Whitby, Ontario

Any youth entering grade 9-12 in September 2022 and anyone graduating grade 12 this June are welcome to participate in this conference. The venue has changed to the Canada Christian College in Whitby, and therefore accommodation is not included, as there is no residence at the College. This venue, however, is located right along the shores of beautiful Lake Ontario with plenty of green space, and has a very large conference room with regular seating. No more bleachers!

The Family Life and Youth Ministry Office of the Diocese of Pembroke will be gathering a group of youth to attend. Fees for this year are $350 per person and includes conference fee, accommodation at a nearby hotel for two nights, all meals from dinner on Friday night to Breakfast Sunday morning, bus transportation and group T-Shirt. 20 spaces for youth are available on a first come, first served basis. A minimum of 15 registered youth will be required for the Diocese to attend as group. Chaperones will be provided. To obtain forms for registration or for questions contact Yvette Bourque at 613 585-6301 or yvettebourque@pembrokediocese.com. Deadline to register is May 27th. To find out more about the conference go to www.steubenvilletoronto.com.

This year’s conference is more expensive than in the past and may be difficult for some families. You are encouraged to approach your Pastor about fundraising, or if you have friends or family close to Whitby that can accommodate you, and you can drive your own group to the Conference and back, it will be cheaper. If you are interested in organizing a group and you need some assistance, please contact Yvette for details.
