ARTICLE – 15 Habits to Evangelize on a Daily Basis

As Christians, our ultimate aim should be to please God. We must recognize that our decisions and actions influence not only our own lives but also those of others. The day we meet Jesus, we will hope to have served him and loved him the way he wants. Jesus succeeded in doing the Father’s will by giving his life and dying on the cross for us (John 16:33).

For us disciples, our mission is to evangelize. Evangelization, wrote Pope John Paul II, is “the primary service which the Church can render to every individual and to all humanity” (Redemptoris Missio, 2).  We are all called to evangelize, that is to lead people to Jesus, by our prayers, our acts of love and by sharing the Good news.

So how can I evangelize to bring people to Jesus?  The following practices and habits can be used on a daily basis.

  1. Be intentional about bringing people to Jesus.
  2. Think about what you can do to make Jesus loved and write it down.
  3. Ask God to lead you to those he has prepared to receive his Word and ask the Holy Spirit to give you the words and deeds to bring them to Jesus.
  4. Start your day in prayer, soak in God’s presence and receive his inspirations.
  5. Make good use of your time by spending some of it with people who do not know Christ. Limit your time with people who may waste yours. The time that God gives us each day is made for his purpose.
  6. Engage conversations about faith or spirituality with new people.
  7. When people share their suffering, illnesses or difficulties, ask if you can pray for them. If they agree, do it, there and then.
  8. Assess which of your activities contributes to the spread of the Gospel.
  9. Stay focused, and eliminate distractions that take you away from your main goal.
  10. Invite people to a small faith group or to church.
  11. Pray often for the people you have shared your faith with.
  12. Spend time learning about evangelization by reading books, blogs, articles, and magazines.
  13. Join others who want to evangelize or ask others to join you.
  14. Create a space in your home where you can invite those who you want to lead to Jesus.
  15. Check with your pastor to see if an evangelization program can be started in your parish.
