ARTICLE – In The Beginning Was the Word: The Primary Role of Scriptures in Evangelization

Before anything else – before the sacraments, before church traditions, before religious practices – Scripture stands as the foundation of all evangelization. Just as a seed must be planted before a tree can grow, the Word of God must take root in hearts before faith can flourish. And Holy Scriptures are more than mere instruments of evangelization; they embody a life giving Word that draws humanity closer to Christ.

The Importance of the Word of God in Evangelization

The Word of God holds a foundational role in the process of evangelization, preceding the sacraments and serving as the essential means through which individuals come to know and share the faith. As Pope Francis emphasizes, all evangelization is rooted in the Word of God, which must be listened to, meditated upon, and lived out in daily life (Evangelii Gaudium 174).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church highlights that baptism, the first of the sacraments, is ignited through the Word of God. The proclamation of God’s Word enlightens the listener, eliciting a response of faith. Thus, the Word of God is not only preparatory but also leads to the reception of the sacraments, as it communicates and cultivates the necessary faith to engage with these divine gifts.

As the International Theological Commission notes, the sacraments are signs that require a response of faith, which is cultivated through engagement with Scripture (The Reciprocity between Faith and Sacraments in the Sacramental Economy, International Theological Commission, 2020).

Application to Our daily Life of Evangelization

When we evangelize, the Scriptures not only provide guidance and clarity but also possess the power to touch the hearts of listeners and communicate the faith. The apostle Paul reminds us, “Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ” (Romans 10:17). Engaging with the Scriptures allows believers to navigate life’s challenges with the assurance of God’s presence and support, while the sacraments offer tangible experiences of God’s grace. The sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, serve as a source of spiritual nourishment, reinforcing the teachings of Scripture and fostering a deeper communion with Christ and the Church.

Every Christian, called to be a witness of faith, must draw from both wells – the living water of God’s Word and the transformative grace of the sacraments. When sharing faith with others, whether in formal settings or casual conversations, the ability to reference and explain Scripture provides authenticity and depth to personal testimony. Moreover, regular engagement with Scripture equips believers to recognize and seize everyday opportunities for evangelization, while participation in the sacraments furnishes the spiritual strength and grace necessary for this mission.

Conclusion

Through Scriptures, God continues to reveal Himself and draw humanity into communion with Him. As Saint John proclaims, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This truth reminds us that all evangelization must begin with and flow from the Word – both the eternal Word made flesh in Jesus Christ and the written Word that bears witness to Him. By the Holy Spirit, the proclaimed Word awakens faith, which then finds its expression in conversion, sacramental life, and the practice of faith. In our modern context, where many seek authentic spiritual experience, this scriptural foundation offers not just a comprehensive path but the divinely ordained way to encountering the living God.
