Pastoral Letter: Called to Witness and Proclaim

Called to Witness and Proclaim: A Pastoral Letter on Evangelization and Catechesis in the Family,” is a resource created by the Episcopal Commission for Evangelization and Catechesis of the English Sector. (Click on the link to read it) This pastoral letter emerged from a priority given to the Commission by the Bishops of the English Sector during their annual meeting in September 2023.

The document, drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Jesus healing Jairus’ daughter, emphasizes the vital role of families in sharing and passing on the Catholic faith. It explores the concept of the family as the “domestic Church,” the importance of intergenerational catechesis, and how faith can be nurtured through everyday life experiences.

The letter also highlights the Kerygma — the core message of the Gospel — as a transformative force in the lives of individuals and families. Ultimately, it calls on families to be active witnesses to their faith, embracing their mission as missionary disciples who contribute to the growth and vitality of the Christian community.
